What does the flag of Mexico look like?

The flag of Mexico has three upright stripes: green, white and red. In the middle is Mexico's coat of arms: an eagle standing on a cactus.

What does the eagle mean?

Mexico's flag shows an eagle on a cactus eating a snake, from an Aztec legend. In the legend, an eagle on a cactus with a snake was the sign that showed the Aztecs where to build their city, Tenochtitlan. They founded it in about 1325, in the marshes of a lake. Mexico City stands on the same spot today.

The green, white and red flag became official in 1821.
