What does the flag of Italy look like?
The flag of Italy has three stripes side by side: green, white and red. Green is nearest the flagpole. The stripes go up and down, like the stripes on the flag of France.
Where did the flag come from?
A green, white and red flag first flew in northern Italy in 1796. Its colours are said to come from the uniforms of soldiers in the city of Milan.
For many years the flag carried the badge of Italy's royal family. In 1946 Italy became a republic, and since then the flag has been plain green, white and red.
