Meet Parasaurolophus

Parasaurolophus was a plant-eater about 9 metres long. It had a long, hollow crest curving back from its head. Inside the crest were tubes that ran from its nostrils.

What was the crest for?

Nobody knows for sure. The hollow crest of Parasaurolophus may have worked like a trumpet, for loud, low calls.

In the 1990s, scientists recreated the sound it might have made: a deep, trumpeting bellow. Nobody knows if Parasaurolophus really sounded like this.

When and where did it live?

In the Late Cretaceous, about 77 to 73 million years ago, in what is now Canada and the USA.
