Meet Brachiosaurus

Its name means arm lizard. Its front legs were longer than its back legs, so its shoulders stood high.

It was a sauropod, one of the giant plant-eaters that walked on four legs, and it was about 22 metres long. It was much taller than Brontosaurus, another long-necked dinosaur.

What did Brachiosaurus eat?

Plants. Brachiosaurus probably held its neck high, like a giraffe, to reach leaves high up in the trees. It could not chew, so it swallowed its food whole.

When did Brachiosaurus live?

In the Late Jurassic, about 150 million years ago, in what is now North America. It lived at the same time and in the same place as Stegosaurus, Diplodocus, Apatosaurus and Allosaurus.

Many pictures of Brachiosaurus are based on a related dinosaur from Africa, called Giraffatitan.
