What does the flag of Brazil look like?

The flag of Brazil is green, with a big yellow diamond. Inside the diamond is a blue globe full of white stars, with a white band across it. The band carries the words Ordem e Progresso, which means Order and Progress.

What do the stars mean?

There are 27 stars: one for each of Brazil's 26 states and one for its Federal District. Brazil's flag shows the stars over Rio de Janeiro on the morning of 15 November 1889. Among them is the Southern Cross, the same group of stars that is on the flag of Australia.

The first form of the flag was raised in 1889, the year Brazil became a republic. It has been changed several times as Brazil gained states, and its form today dates from 1992.
