What does the flag of Australia look like?
The flag of Australia is blue. In the top corner nearest the flagpole is the Union Flag of the United Kingdom. Below it is a big white star with seven points, called the Commonwealth Star. On the other side, five white stars make the shape of the Southern Cross.
What do the stars and the small flag mean?
The Union Flag shows Australia's history with the United Kingdom. The seven points of the Commonwealth Star stand for the six states and Australia's territories.
The Southern Cross is a group of stars best seen from the southern half of the world. It cannot be seen at all from as far north as the UK.
The design won a competition in 1901, after thousands of people sent in ideas.
