Meet Venus
Venus is the second planet from the Sun. Venus and Mars are Earth's next-door neighbours. It is about 12,100 kilometres across, a little smaller than Earth. Venus is so close to Earth's size that it is sometimes called Earth's twin.
The hottest planet
Venus is the hottest planet in our Solar System, hotter even than Mercury. Venus is farther from the Sun than Mercury, but its thick atmosphere traps heat like a blanket.
Its surface is about 467 degrees Celsius, hot enough to melt lead. Its air is mostly carbon dioxide, and its thick clouds are made of an acid called sulfuric acid.
Slow and backwards
Venus spins the opposite way to most planets. On Venus, the Sun rises in the west and sets in the east.
It spins very slowly too. One turn takes 243 Earth days, which is longer than its year of 225 Earth days.
Bright in the sky
After the Sun and the Moon, Venus is the brightest thing in our sky. Venus is often called the Morning Star or the Evening Star, even though it is a planet.
Venus has no moons and no rings.
