What does the flag of India look like?
The flag of India has three stripes going across: saffron, a deep orange, on top, then white, then green. In the middle of the white stripe is a navy blue wheel.
What do the colours and the wheel mean?
Saffron is often said to stand for courage, white for peace and truth, and green for fertility and growth.
The wheel is called the Ashoka Chakra. An early design had a spinning wheel in its place. The Ashoka Chakra was copied from an old stone carving made for the emperor Ashoka.
The flag was adopted on 22 July 1947 and first raised on 15 August 1947, the day India became independent.
